Any of several plants of the genus Tanacetum of the composite family, especially T. vulgare, native to Eurasia, having corymbs of buttonlike yellow flower heads and aromatic, finely divided leaves that are sometimes used medicinally.

Herbal medicine
A perennial weed that contains bitter glycosides, citric acid, oxalic acid, terpenoids and thujone, a volatile oil that is antispasmodic. Tansy has been used as a vermifuge and for scabies, menstrual disorders and rheumatic pain.

Toxicity
Thujone is a known central nervous system depressant, and should not be used in pregnancy.
